Tassels are bright, happy, and a simple way to dress up a birthday cake. Using items found around the house, you can create this adorable garland while the cake bakes away in the oven.

You will need

• 2 bamboo skewers
• Tissue paper (recycling left over scraps works well)
• Twine, ribbon, or string
• Tape – washi if you have it
• Scissors
• Hot glue gun

1 Cut tissue paper into strips, approximately 1.5 inches by 5 inches. You need stacks of three or four strips per tassel.
2 Fold the stack in half. Carefully cut 1cm width fringe, leaving a half inch margin at the top (folded) end.
3 Unfold the stack.
4 Starting from one end, tightly roll the tissue paper.
5 Twist the centre.

6 Tie one end of the twine onto the top (flat) end of your bamboo skewer.
7 Fold a tassel in half and place it over the twine. Twist the tassel around itself below the twine.
8 Secure the twist with a small piece of tape. Repeat with all the other tassels, then secure the opposite end of twine onto another bamboo skewer.
Place into your cake and you’re ready to party!
These are so quick and easy to make, you might find they become a staple decoration at your parties. I make them so often my sister asked if I had a drawer full of them for me to grab whenever needed.
